FAQ: What do I do if I smell gas or see a damaged gas line?

Critical steps to take in a gas leak emergency

If you smell the distinct rotten egg odor of natural gas or see a damaged gas line, you must treat it as an immediate and severe emergency.

  • Your first action should be to evacuate the area immediately.

  • Do not use any electrical devices, including light switches, phones, or appliances, as a single spark could ignite the gas.

  • Do not create any open flames or smoke.

  • Once you are at a safe distance from the house—such as a neighbor's home or across the street—call your local gas company's emergency line or 911.  Do not make the call from inside the property.

  • Wait for emergency responders to arrive and do not re-enter the home until they have declared it safe.

Regular maintenance and professional installation of gas appliances are the best prevention, but a suspected leak is never a DIY issue. Only trained professionals have the equipment and expertise to locate the source, shut off the supply, and make the necessary repairs to ensure your home is safe from the risks of explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning.
